The North Island Rhododendron Society, a chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, was founded in 194 with the society's charter received on October 20, 1984. The club is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009.
With funds raised through plant sales and garden tours, in 1996 the members decided to enter into a major project by building and maintaining a community rhododendron garden. Located along the walking path between the Visitor Information Centre and the Courtenay Airpark, The Comox Valley Rhododendron Garden is ideally situated for maximum public enjoyment. Club members continue to maintain the garden with spring and summer work parties.
Major fundraising events for the chapter include a Rhododendron Sale and Show on the first Sunday in May, and an annual Mothers' Day Garden Tour on the second Sunday of May. In addition, members open their gardens to fellow members of tours throughout the summer, and occasionally partake in out of town trips to enjoy gardens in other areas.
Our meetings, held the 2nd Tuesday each month (except May through August) are informative for everyone from novice to seasoned expert. Following the business portion of the meetings, we have a short educational session followed by a guest speaker for 45 to 60 minutes, usually on a rhododendron related program.
At the conclusion of each meeting, there is a coffee social which provides an opportunity to mingle with members and guests for discussions relating to garden adventures. Chatting about rhododendrons and companion plants is what we do best, and the reason we all come together as members. Guests and new members are always welcome.
