The mission of the Nanaimo Community Gardens Society is to help more people grow more food in our region. To accomplish this we have educational programming that aims to give people theskills to grow their own food. Our educational garden demonstrates different gardening techniques that can be applied to urban backyards and showcases food plants that can be grown on the Island.
While we offer some allotment plots, the majority of our gardening areas are communcal so that participants can learn hands-on gardening skills alongside others in a casual, non-threatening way. We offer an interesting range of workshops to the public from pruning to seed saving.
The Nanaimo Community Gardens Society has launched a social enterprise which aims to provide education to the public and raise funds for the society through plant sales. The seedlings are organically grown herb and vegetable varieties that will produce well for the home gardener. These young plants are sold in May and June from experienced, trained society volunteers.
