Club Profile

The Dunbar Garden Club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday, September through November and January through May, at Dunbar Community Centre, 4747 Dunbar Street (at 31st Avenue).

The agenda consists of greetings and announcements from the president, gardening questions and tips from members, a show bench of current flowers and foliage, a draw of member-donated prizes, a presentation by a visiting expert on a gardening topic, and a social time, with tea and member-donated goodies.

The club’s newsletter, Dig It in Dunbar, is published in each of the months mentioned above. Distribution by e-mail has reduced the number of hard-copy issues produced. An archive of back issues and a binder of back issues members may borrow are maintained. A library of member-donated gardening books is available to members at each meeting.

In addition to the meetings, members enjoy field trips to gardens and nurseries, viewing one another’s open gardens, gathering for a Christmas party at the community centre, and ending the year with a spring tea at a member’s garden.

For many, the highlight of the year is the club’s plant sale, usually held the day before the big VanDusen plant sale. Proceeds from the sale go toward operating costs, speakers’ fees, and the club’s donation to the B.C. Council of Garden Clubs Scholarship Trust Fund.

When the club began, back in 1962, most of the members were male; today’s membership is predominantly female. We have no explanation for that. Everyone’s welcome. To join, a person must join both the community centre and the club. Fees for both are low. A person may attend as a guest, paying a $3 fee.
